Lawsuit Tax Increases 4% in 2004

Lawsuits raise California’s cost of living, costing a family of four around $3,380 a year

Sacramento – Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse, reacting to a recently released report by Tillinghast-Towers Perrin that states that costs on society due to lawsuits have increased by 4%, is using April 15, “Tax Day” to highlight the impact that lawsuit abuse has on our communities and our quality of life.

“We are paying more for goods and services due to lawsuit abuse and it needs to stop,” said Andrew Ysiano, Chairman-Central California Citizens Against Lawsuit Abuse (CCCALA). “Greedy personal injury lawyers have created a “sue first” climate in our society and our reaping the benefits.”

According to a study released by Tillinghast-Towers Perrin, each U.S. citizen pays $845 annually in his/her share of lawsuit costs. That comes out to $3,380 for a family of four.

“This is a hidden cost that everyone pays everyday. Lawsuits increase the cost of food, healthcare, and services that we use everyday,” said Diann Rogers, Executive Director of CCCALA. “Just think of how a family could spend this money?”

In an effort to better understand what a family of four could otherwise spend their money on CCCALAhas compiled a list of items that could be purchased with the same amount that we spend paying back our lawsuit tax.

  • 5 months of daycare for a 4-5 year old child = $3010 1
  • 1579 gallons of gas at $2.14/gallon = $3379.06 2
  • 805 gallons of Safeway Lucerne 2% Reduced Fat Milk = $3372.95 3
  • 868 dozen of Egglands Best Grade AA Large Egg s= $3376.52 3
  • 294 packages of Huggies Baby Shape Disposable Diapers 40 Count = $3378.06 3
  • 1058 loaves of Safeway SELECT Enriched White Country Bread = $3375.02 3

Signs of lawsuit abuse are everywhere, ads for personal injury lawyers who promise "big money for your injuries," people threatening to sue over trivial matters and a lawsuit industry that manufactures reasons to sue anyone for almost anything. Lawsuit abuse is ruining our courts, threatening employers, making our country a laughingstock – and it costs you money every day.
